HHMI Encourages Texas-Based National Teaching Program with $22.5 Million Award

In a White House ceremony on Monday that was part of a national effort to draw more science and math majors across the country into teaching, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) issued $22.5 million in awards aimed at expanding the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). This initiative is Texas-based, and was formed in 2007 as a means of scaling up the UTeach Program, which began at the University of Texas at Austin in 1997.

Proposal for M.D. Program at University of North Texas Still a Long-Shot

University of North Texas’ 3-year-old proposal to institute an M.D. program in its Health Science Center still has a long way to go as it continues to face opposition from key individuals backing the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM), as well as parties concerned with the lack of sufficient residency slots in the region.
