UT Health Northeast Microbiologist Receives Award From American Society for Microbiology

UT Health Northeast’s Barbara Brown-Elliott, MS, supervisor of their internationally known Mycobacteria/Nocardia Laboratory, received the 2013 Scherago-Rubin Award from the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) yesterday during the society’s annual meeting in Denver, for excellence in clinical laboratory performance.

MD Anderson Participates in Studying Alternative Treatment Methods for Cancer

Although recent advancements in medicine have made strides in treating cancer, it is still the second leading cause of death within our country. Currently, there are approximately 13 million people in America who either have had or currently have cancer. Over 500,000 people are expected to die this year (over 1,500 per day) in the US from some form of the disease. That’s why the MD Anderson Cancer Center, along with many other cancer research facilities across the world are steadily researching new treatments and searching for a cure.

Baylor College of Medicine researching hormone that could be the cure for diabetes

A new hormone discovered by accident could mean that those suffering from diabetes will need fewer insulin injections. The Baylor College of Medicine in Houston is one of the facilities researching this new hormone that could mean lifelong relief for patients with diabetes.

Apple Wants To Take iOS7 To Your Car

If anyone was worrying about the fate, or future, of Apple, they can put those fears and worries to rest. It seems that Apple is branching out from just the regular handheld devices and is looking at integrating their future generation of iOS, most specifically iOS7, into cars. Reports coming out of the Apple camp reveal that Apple plans to move aggressively into the in-car integration space later this year. Apple is working with car makers to deeply embed iOS’s Maps and Siri services into cars, according to these people. While companies sell accessories to place iPhone and other iOS devices on car dashboards for easy access to Apple Maps’ turn-by-turn navigation, Apple wants to break into the space with its own solutions.

Texas GOP Big Three Perry, Dewhurst, Straus Donors Tied To Firms That Bagged Enterprise-Fund Millions, Watchdog Group Says

Texans for Public Justice, an Austin-based non-profit organization organized in 1997 to expose what it considers to be political corruption and corporate abuses in Texas, says that the Republican Party of Texas and three state politicians who control the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) collected $5.3 million in political money from donors affiliated with $307 million in Enterprise Fund grants.

Melatonin No Help For Late-stage Cancer Weight Loss U. OF Texas Study Finds

Reuters’ Kathryn Doyle reports that notwithstanding encouraging results in the past, a new clinical trial published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology has determined that orally administered Melatonin has proved ineffective in helping advanced cancer patients improve appetites or achieve weight loss.
